Minnesota Schools Slipping?

In today's edition of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, an article by Laura Billings informed us that Minnesota schools (specifically High School) are not doing as well as we'd hope.

And I quote:

"Not one of the high schools we send these kids to cracks the country's top 100."

Her revelation comes from a Newsweek article assessing our High Schools.

"Editors arrived at the rankings by combining the total number of Advanced Placement and/or International Baccalaureate exams taken by students in 2004, divided by the number of graduating seniors."

Our top school on the list, Edina, ended up at 201st place. My own high school, Southwest (Minneapolis), came in as 2nd for Minnesota at 296. Of the 13 schools to make it in the top 1000, only 7 have IB programs.

So who made the top grade? Alabama.

Worst still, is that American 15 year olds rank fairly low compared to other countries, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. According to them, we are about par with Latvia.
