U.S. Judge Rejects Neb. Gay-Marriage Ban
Another step in the right direction. STORY >>Whether you believe that marriage should be between one man and one woman, you have to concede that GLBT couples have rights as human beings.
The Declaration of Independence said:
"that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
The ban on gay marriage being amended to the constitution of many of our states would curtail some of the basic rights as defined here. Specifically the pursuit of Happiness.
"That's not true," you say? Consider this:
Our society teaches us many things, including what is expected of us and what defines happiness in the eyes of our society. One of the basic definitions is the ability to marry and raise a family. By banning gay marriage, we have banned those individuals who are gay from marrying their partners. Further, many states include clauses which prohibit any other unions from being recognized as an "equivalent" to marriage. This, simply said, rules out even the possibility of a civil union.
It is particularly sad to me that we as a nation have started back on this road to bigotry and exclusionism. Let's hope this we can change course.
