Windmills in the Sky
It seems that I never put this on my blog, and its about time to fix that.This article as published on Wired News, Apr. 06, 2005, is about an Australian engineer who is developing a new type of windmill generator. It uses winds 15,000 feet up in the air. That's almost 3 miles!
The idea is that winds in the upper atmosphere are more constant, which alleviates the issues with wind power on the ground. Specifically, wind on the ground is very irratic and varies greatly in strength and duration. The vision is to have hundreds of these tethered to the ground, and feed electricity to an energy hungry world.
"It's absurd that all this time we have turned a blind eye to the energy right above our heads," he said. "High-altitude wind power represents the most concentrated flux of renewable energy found on Earth."

That's a great story- it reminds me of a short-story chapter that I'd written for the Paj Ntaub Voice journal years ago, Operation: Tiger Wind which revolved around an Australian team that had been sent in to help set up a series of these same energy generators like this all over the mountains of Laos and Southeast Asia. It was actually a rather popular story, but now it's interesting to see it come even closer to reality.
