The Last Beam Up

Television's favorite engineer, James Doohan (aka Scotty), died Wednesday at his Redmond, Wash., home. The cause of death was pneumonia and complications from Alzheimer's disease, which he was diagnosed with in 2004.

Doohan was a D-Day veteran from the Canadian military. He attended New York's famed Neighborhood Playhouse, which counts amongst its students such notable actors as Leslie Nielsen and Tony Randall.

Doohan had a career as a character actor before he became the lovable Scot on Star Trek. After the series ended, he was typecast and had difficulty finding work. Things eased up on him when he followed his dentist's advice to "go with the flow."
